WHAT IS A KID BIRD?

The Oxford English Dictionary Definition.

/kɪd bɜrd/

noun

A young person with imaginative, unconventional ideas, characterized by uninhibited creativity and a lack of concern for limitations of knowledge or skill. Often used to describe someone who dreams big and pursues ambitious goals without being deterred by inexperience.

We think it’s a familiar feeling, that belief you have as a kid that you can fly as long as you have some cardboard wings and run fast enough. It’s a feeling that often fades as you grow up and get rewarded with boring realism instead.

Meet Menno.

Lead Guitar

Menno grew up in a house full of records: Beatles, Santana, CCR, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, the kind of collection that does the teaching before any teacher does.

By ten he was playing Samba Pa Ti on his first Yamaha strat-style guitar, with Abraxas worn grey on a walkman. The 90s added RHCP, Radiohead and Placebo to the mix. The result is a player who moves between blues and ambient rock like they were always the same language and at Kid Bird, they just about are.

Meet Thomas.

Vocals & Guitar

Thomas is the band's living jukebox and its most demanding critic. His influences run from Johnny Cash to Elizabeth Cotton to Oasis, and he holds all of them to an exacting standard. As a singer-songwriter he brings the songs into focus and then keeps pushing until they're exactly right.

Meet Hessel.

Drums

Hessel is the anchor. A metronome with taste, he brings an encyclopedic command of rhythm from 70s rock to funk grooves. He brings the kind of quiet musicianship that makes everyone around him sound better. The band found its footing the moment he sat behind the kit.

Meet Maurits.

Bass & Backing Vocals

Kid Bird found Maurits in a bar on Hessel's birthday. Luck, timing, or just a good night out…either way, the band hasn't been the same since. His bass lines carry soul, funk and blues in equal measure, and his ear for melody turns the low end into something you actually listen to. The kind of musician who makes a song feel finished.

Our story.

There's a feeling most people remember and few hold onto : the absolute certainty, somewhere around age eight, that cardboard wings and enough speed might actually get you off the ground. Kid Bird is named for that feeling.

The four-piece from Amsterdam came together through music circles, drawn by a shared instinct to make something without overthinking what it should be. Their sound pulls from country, surf rock and blues, road-worn and reverb-soaked, with lyrics that sit in the uncomfortable space between restlessness and acceptance. Equal parts sun-bleached and weathered, it's music that moves forward even when it's looking back.

Growing up gets loud about what's realistic. Kid Bird isn't interested.
